Long Term Disability Denial #34

I met with a lawyer last week to discuss helping me with my denial from Unum. This lawyer had the most information about private policy LTD and fighting them. He has 35 years experience with this type of stuff and came highly recommended.

He was honest and got right to the point. He said the chances of this being overturned was less than 5% and he couldn’t in good faith take my money knowing through experience what may happen. He stated that when it comes to cancer, while Stage IV is definitely different than StageIII and I was NED (no eveidence of disease) for 16 months, all cancers fall under an umbrella.  I appreciate his forth rightness and the advice he did give me. I’m on my own with this appeal as GOVCHA (Governor’s Consumer Health Advocate) is not able to help me either.

So now I’m trying to figure how I am supposed to live on my SSDI benefit while paying for health insurance, living expenses, my $225 a month in medication and hundreds of dollars in medical bills. I can work part time but….. Lately, I have been experiencing incredibly painful headaches and low back pain. I had my regularly scheduled PET/CT and an MRI with/without contrast.

My PET/CT shows stable disease and my MRI was “completely unremarkable” So, my headaches could be from stress, BIG SHOCKER THERE or something as simple as not drinking enough water or hormones (as those are coming back). Either way, brain MRI’s are in my future along with PET/CT’s every 3 months.

I don’t know what I’m going to do and feel so defeated by this disease. BUT I will figure something out, I always do.
